Giffords Circus treat for local deaf children

Families from Cirencester Deaf Children’s Club were treated to a magical trip to Giffords Circus thanks to the fundraising efforts of Cirencester Golf Club this year. A Pro-Am tournament held at Cirencester Golf Club earlier this year raised £420 and also ensured a sign language interpreter could give communication support during the recent show.

Cirencester Deaf Children’s Club is run by Gloucestershire Deaf Association, whose Chief Executive Jenny Hopkins said, “We cannot thank Cirencester Golf Club enough for their wonderful donation, and especially ladies captain Paula Lester Powell for selecting CDCC as her charity for the year. I was delighted she agreed to come along to Giffords Circus as well, as our special guest, so that she could see for herself the joy on the faces of our CDCC members.”

Cirencester Deaf Children’s Club takes place the first Saturday morning of each month at the Youth Opportunities Playcentre in Beeches Road. It is run by a team of five volunteers, including one Deaf sign language user and another who is a ccchlear implant wearer after becoming severely deaf as an adult. The play leader, Tildi Cowling, is hearing and at the same time a skilled sign language user, and actively encourages a total communication environment. That way, whether a deaf children uses speech or sign to communicate, or a mixture of both, they are encouraged to develop their language skills. Mums, Dads and carers are also given tips on how to assist communication with their deaf child.
