Whats On
The Friday Club in Bourton

Friday 5th September will see the launch of The Friday Club, at Jubilee Lodge (next to Collett Ford), Bourton-On-The-Water. The new club will be a playgroup welcoming in particular families with tots up to to 5 years of age, who have been identified with any level of delayed language development due to hearing and/or speech impairment. But other children will be welcome too The playgroup, the second children’s club under the umbrella of Gloucestershire Deaf Association, is being run by a small team of volunteers and led by local Bourton mum of two, Gina Davis.

The playgroup will be held every Friday morning between 10am -12 noon. Parents/carers and children will enjoy a range of indoor and outdoor crafts associated with a regular playgroup, but with extra activities to promote communication, including learning basic sign language through nursery rhymes.

Says Gina, “”The emphasis will be about providing a safe and relaxing environment where children who use hearing aids or cochlear implants, or are currently non-verbal, can enjoy a total communication environment that will include Makaton, British Sign Language, Picture Exchange Communication as well as English. Their hearing siblings and friends will benefit as well, as we will also focus on learning patience and how to give visual cues, which are vital skills for families if they want to support a deaf and/or speech impaired child.”

Interested parents and carers should contact Gloucestershire Deaf Association on 01452 372999, Gina Davis on 07515 866358, or email admin@glosdeaf.org.uk.”
