Record-breaking Race Night

GDA's very own Gold Cup raises a record-breaking amount for deaf community

GDA’s popular Race Night fundraiser returned for another year on Friday 11th March, welcoming a sell-out audience to its Community Centre on Colin Road, Barnwood.

Guests including the Sheriff of Gloucester enjoyed a night at the races to raise money for a very special project GDA runs to enable Deaf and hard of hearing people access services and support.

GDA’s Transport Fund was set up in 2014 as a way of assisting local Deaf and hard of hearing people get to the charity’s clubs and support services. Since then 225 children and adults have been able to enjoy Deaf Lunch Clubs, regular hard of hearing group meetings, Friendship Circle social events and special day trips that without the fund they wouldn’t have been able to.

Gemma Sills, GDA’s Fundraiser said “Our Transport Fund is a life-line for Deaf and hard of hearing people in Gloucestershire. It allows us to give them a helping hand to step away from isolation and loneliness that so often comes with deafness, and instead give them an opportunity to be part of a supportive community and feel a sense of belonging. Our Friendship Circle social activities are always extremely popular but without the fund many wouldn’t be able to attend. Friday’s event means that we can continue to provide this free service in to the future.”

The evening was hosted by GDA’s Gemma Sills and Reg Cobb and raised a Race Night record-breaking £1,508.

Local businesses HB Digital, Kingscott Dix, Endsleigh Insurance and Barnwood General Works sponsored the sell-out evening meaning all of the money raised on the night goes directly to ensure the future of the Transport Fund.

GDA is now welcoming other organisations and local businesses to host their own Race Nights at our Barnwood site. GDA’s expertise in running these events means the charity can support groups in putting on the evenings.

Gemma Sills continued “These events can be perfect team building exercises or simply a great excuse for a fun get-together. By choosing to host your Race Night at GDA you will not only be supporting a local charity, but you will be providing employment opportunities for local Deaf people through our additional catering and bar facilities. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
