Whats On
They did it!

And with two hours to spare!!

At a little after 2.30pm on Saturday 20th October, our team of nine cyclists completed their Lands End to John O’Groats 24hr bike challenge, and in some style! The team kick started their cycling efforts at 5pm on the 19th October and for the next 22hrs they cycled their socks off on very, very little sleep – but that didn’t stop the smiles and team comradery all the way to the end. The atmosphere when they cycled their last 2kms was electric, and full of love and support for each other – it was pretty emotional.

Not only did they complete the 969 mile journey in style, but as a team, they have raised over £4,500 for GDA, which with their matched funding means they will reach a grand total of over £5,500.
As well as the team taking on their epic challenge, we should also tell you about Ellen. Ellen is from our Deaf community and as well as living with deafness, she also has a level of sight impairment. Ellen wanted to join our team of 100 challenges participants, so asked for the chance to have a go on the fourth bike to cycle 8 miles. Over the last few weeks, Ellen has been attending the gym to train, and on Saturday afternoon, she knocked it out of the park! We managed to arrange it so Ellen could cycle the last 2kms of her 8 miles with our team of nine, and it was wonderful to allow Ellen to be part of such a special ending. In June next year, Ellen will be attempting to swim for GDA, despite never having swum before. Ellen’s effort this weekend sums up the beauty of this 100 challenges campaign, it’s inclusive to everyone and is inspiring people of all abilities to get involved.
Our 100 challenges campaign is just one of the ways that GDA will be celebrating it's 100th anniversary in 2019. The charity is inviting 100 people to take on a challenge for GDA. The challenge can be anything - swim, walk, run, climb, dance, sing, bake, cook, host an event or give something up for a month. Anything. Each of the 100 people is being asked to raise at least £100, which will then be matched by the very generous Windsor Family Trust, meaning GDA could stand to benefit from an additional £10,000.
So far over 80 people have pledged to take on a challenge for GDA. We'd love to reach our full team of 100, so if you'd like to join the team, why not drop us a note to find out how we can help you kick-start your challenge. Get in touch on 01452 372999 or email 100challenges@gda.org.uk.
