GDA's community centre re-opens

GDA's popular Community Centre in Barnwood has re-opened after redevelopment work, thanks in part to a £65,000 grant from Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, with landfill tax contributions donated by Cory Environmental. The Community Centre, housed in a building that once was Barnwood Primary School and now home to Gloucestershire Deaf Association (GDA), was forced to close in November after GDA had to sell half its site in order to help settle a local government pension scheme deficit.

The sale of land meant the charity not only lost its car park, but also its washrooms and storage rooms. These were in a newer part of the building that extended into the part of land being sold, and so had to be demolished. GDA sought funds for the necessary building works to create new washrooms and storage rooms inside the footprint of the original building. Outside a new, smaller car park also had to be created.

GDA hosts around 22 regular groups at its Community Centre, deaf and non-deaf-related, and the venue is popular among other charities for being disabled friendly, With GDA’s help, most found temporary alternative accommodation elsewhere, but are now keen to return to the Colin Road venue.

GDA’s Chief Executive Jenny Hopkins said, “We are grateful to Gloucestershire Environmental Trust and Cory Environmental, as well as to our other funders, for the support they have given.  It has been a testing time but thanks to them, we can look forward to our Community Centre becoming a thriving hub again.

“Altogether the charity has had to raise nearly half a million pounds to help pay off the deficit and at the same time do the necessary works to keep our Community Centre open. We have achieved that without compromising a single service to the deaf and deaf-blind people we support in Gloucestershire. This has been an extraordinary achievement for a small charity by any standard. Today we still need to raise a final £30,000, in order to complete the final part of the project, which is to replace a lost storage room and add separate washrooms for the offices. It’s the very last bit of the climb and we would obviously welcome any further donations - large or small - that help us finally complete this re-development work.”

You can donate money to GDA’s appeal by sending a cheque to: Gloucestershire Deaf Association (marked on the back ‘’Centre appeal’), Colin Road, Barnwood, Gloucester GL4 3JL or phone 01452 372999 to donate over the phone.
