Festive lunch for Gloucestershire’s hard of hearing

Local Deaf charity, GDA (Gloucestershire Deaf Association) hosted its annual Friendship Circle Christmas party on Tuesday 22nd November for a record-breaking crowd.

Seventy three people, each living with hearing loss, came to GDA to enjoy a festive get together. A tasty hot lunch was provided by up-and-coming caterers Yumma Food, and entertainment came from the Wide Valley Singers who belted out a mix of festive and non-festive tunes. Partners from TSB Head Office in Barnwood, one of GDA’s corporate charity partners, volunteered their time to lend a hand during the proceedings.

GDA’s Friendship Circle was set up as a supportive and social group for anyone living in Gloucestershire with an acquired hearing loss. It has now grown into a popular network which allows people, who might otherwise be isolated and lonely as a result of their hearing impairment, to come together to meet new friends and catch-up with old ones.

Gemma Sills, GDA’s Event and Communication Officer said “The huge success of the day emphasises just how important occasions like these are. We know how devastatingly isolating hearing loss can be, and giving our hard of hearing community the chance to come together in a mutually supportive environment is invaluable. The day wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the wonderful partners from TSB who pulled out all the stops to get food and drinks served. Our sincere thanks to them.

The cost of the event was sponsored by a donation from Ecclesiastical Insurance following staff volunteering at the Friendship Circle Summer party in June.
